Editorial Review:

Product DescriptionToshiba's Regza line of TVs marry state-of-the-art technology to hip design. One feature that sets them apart is PixelPure 14-bit digital video processing, which creates more than 4,000 levels of color gradations for a smooth, natural-looking picture without posterization or image banding. Another benefit is a fast response time. Response time is the interval an LCD screen takes to from its darkest color to its lightest color and back again, measured in milliseconds (ms). This screen's response time is 8 ms, which is at the faster and better end of the spectrum. This screen is likely to display cleaner, sharper images during high-action scenes and with fewer image artifacts than other screens in its class. This technology is housed in a black gloss cabinetry that is sure to fit well with most any decor. The 42HL167 has a panel resolution of 1920x 1080 pixels. This qualifies it as a 1080 progressive-line (1080p) HDTV, which is a the highest-quality picture available. The 'p' stands for 'progressive.' 1080p is better in quality compared to 1080i. Further, the 16:9 wide screen aspect ratio on this set delivers most movies the way they were meant to be seen in the theater, without back bars wasting the top and bottom of the screen.

Features:
  • 42" widescreen HDTV (16:9 aspect ratio)
  • built-in digital (ATSC) and analog (NTSC) tuners for over-the-air TV broadcasts (antenna required)
  • built-in QAM cable TV tuner receives unscrambled programs without a set-top box (cable service required)
  • CineSpeed LCD panel (1920 x 1080 pixels)
  • 15 Pin D-Sub PC Input Supports: 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768 only. All at 60Hz.

Customer Reviews
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - very impressed
i was choosing between Samsung and this TV, and i am so glad i chose this one! i have to say, i am not an artist, so my perception of color is very average. having said that, i think my HD channels are very life-like! i still find myself being amazed at how awesome it comes in.
i remember there was a couple of reviews here about how it takes forever to get turned on. YES! it's a good 30 seconds before it actually wakes up. it can get annoying, but for the price you're paying and the quality of everything else, I'd say it's worth it.
The TV has a lot of ports: i have my cable box, my dvd player, and my wii hooked up to it, and i still have one or two open!
i tried to hook up my laptop to it, and while you can watch movies (they come in just fine), i had a lot of trouble with adjusting screen rez so it would be readable. so basically, make sure you know what you're doing, or have someone who does close by :) i had someone tell me it would never be readable b/c of the kind of TV it is (1080p) but the jury is still out on that one.
oh, and don't forget about amazon's 30 day price guarantee! i got about $200 back around Christmas time.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Very Happy with the Toshiba
I'm very happy with this product. It's exactly what I expected and it arrived promptly. Great value.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Absolutely Fantastic
This was my first LCD purchase and first time buying something this expensive online. Needless to say I was concerned. But I got this TV at a great price so I went for it. Then I got to test Amazons price match guarantee as the price went even further down after I ordered it. Customer service was top notch. My other concern, delivery, was also wonderful. The TV arrived ahead of schedule and was in great shape.

The television was easy to set up. I had the old TV out and the new one in place and hooked up within an hour. I was initially concerned with the picture my poor 480i SD cable source provided. But after playing a DVD (still only at 480p) I was impressed. Moved my cable to run through the DVD player and this cleared up the poor cable signal quite a bit. The picture looks great. Can't wait for Direct TV and a new Blu Ray player. I've seen this TV with an HD source at retailers and it looks as good as ANY other LCD they had displayed.

Is this the best TV out there? I guess not if you read the reviews. But it gets plenty of good ratings. For the brief time that I've had this TV I personally think it should be put near the top of everyones list.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - toshbia 1080 42in flat screen hdtv
the tv is great. my only issues are that when you turn the tv on it takes more time then you would expect for the picture to come up. i have another toshiba hdtv and it does the same thing sdo i guess thats how they are made. also when changing the channel it take a few seconds for the pic to come in but again i guess thats how toshiba makes there tvs. other the that love it. picture quality is great and to get a 42in 1080 flat screen hdtv for under a grand is amazing.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - wow..
truly amazing tv, i shopped for a long time, and i never found a better tv in this price range. the tv arrived 2 days early, set up took about 15 minutes, all-in-all, the best purchase i ever made

This is a first for yours truly--Wi-Fi from a commercial flight: I'm blogging from somewhere above 10,000 feet on Virgin America's press event flight to kick off its commercial launch of Internet in-flight Internet service. The flight is littered with e-celebrities and a few real ones (a couple of the great ensemble from 30 Rock are here). We're flying over the ocean. And the Gogo Internet service from Aircell seems to be working just fine. I've Twittered, I've IM'd, and I'm about to post this blog entry. (Success! Updated later.)

There are about 130-odd people aboard, and I should apparently recognize lots of people, but I am so unhip, as Douglas Adams once wrote, that it's a wonder my bum doesn't fall off. I was able to talk briefly with Dave Cush, the head of Virgin America, who is very keen on having this rolled out, and at some length with Jack Blumenstein, the head of Aircell. (I did a in-flight air-to-ground interview with Blumenstein for BoingBoingTV which I'll link to when my fine friends there have the segment edited and up.)

virgin_wifi_small.jpg

The service works as one might expect: Aircell has had months to troubleshoot problems via the American pilot, and we're flying right around San Francisco, so nothing unpredictable in the middle part of the country. In a quick test using Qwest's bandwidth tester, I was able to get 700 Kbps downstream--while there were 100 other people using the service, too.

This wasn't a commercial flight (it was technically a charter), but it was on a regular Virgin America Airbus 320 using Aircell's ground network. Some material was broadcast live from the plane to YouTube Live, which was hosting a simultaneous event on the ground at Fort Mason in San Francisco.

This is the first time I've used Internet service on a commercial plane. Back a few years ago, I was on a Connexion by Boeing press flight that used ground stations for the flight instead of the production satellite servers.

Virgin isn't the first domestic airline to launch Internet service; American Airlines has a pilot with 15 planes that have been in the air on cross country routes for nearly three months. But Virgin is poised to be the first airline to launch Wi-Fi fleet wide. Delta has made a commitment--and they have several hundred planes in the U.S.--but hasn't gotten its first bird launched with service. Alaska, Southwest, and JetBlue have various plans that seem to have been pushed into 2009.

Netbeans 6.5 is recently released. Along with tons of new features, it has some enhancements for Web Services development. The foremost is that with Netbeans 6.5, you can easily develop Web Services applications and deploy on to Glassfish V3. There are are other features like configuring WS-Addressing, and exposing a SOAP based Web service as REST service through GUI caught my attention.
