Decent for the price
I just received this unit and am learning how to use it.
So far, it appears to work decently. However, I am spoiled by another machine I have - a Panasonic which allows use of DVD-RAM discs. This Toshiba model doesn't allow RAM discs. It does, however, allow marking chapters and then "hiding" those chapters - effectively allowing editing of unwanted bits (commercials) from recorded programs, etc. That is a plus, although apparently only while using +RW or -RW discs.
Still, a decent machine for the decent price.

Great!
Finally decided to upgrade from VCR recording to DVD and I couldn't be happier. An added plus, it has inputs on the front so I can record my old home videos on Video8 tapes on DVD. Fantastic.

DVD Recorder
Use it very little but when I did it worked fine. The manual could be more easier to understand.

Very good so far
Got this yesterday. This device is very easy to hook up and recordings look pretty good. I have a wide variety of blank DVDs and except for some JVC disks I got on sale, it has recognized them all. The setup is easy and the remote intuitive, but with small buttons. The menus are easy to navigate. The manual is large, but well-written and I always say, too much information is never enough. Anyone who is just minimally experienced can set this machine up quickly and be recording in minutes. I use it with an analog TV in the bedroom. My main device in my home theater is a Panasonic DMR-EH75VS with a VCR and 80gb hard drive. When I upgrade my TV in the bedroom with a LCD or plasma later this year the combo, including the Tosh, will be a good one. Buy it--it is priced right and is a very good performer doing what it does--recording DVDs.

How can anyone beat this!
Remember when these machines came out they were close to a thousand dollars? Along comes this Recorder. At this price I was a little worried about it and the 100 page manual Don't be.Believe me I'm not the one you go to when setting these things up.I get frustrated fast so you can see why i almost panicked when i saw the manual.Take your time if i can do it anyone can.So far it is a steal. The first time you set it up it will take a little time,it took me one hour.I've had no problems it works great, but can anyone tell me why put tuners on any of these recorders in the first place.Update 07-21-08.Be sure you finalize your d-v-d or it will not play on any other machine but yours.Just follow Auto Finalizing pages 27-28-29.It's easy!Update 07-26-08.My unit is hooked up to a 32 inch tube tv.I could not use it on my Sharp gaming tv because it's filled up with four video games plus cable. If you have a HDMI output use it that's a no brainer. If you don't make sure you use the Component video hookup on page 18.You Will still need to use the S-video to get your best picture plus using all the hookups on page 17.Take your time and you'll be happy.
