Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Poor DVD playing
I bought this sylvania DVD/VCR recorder/player last year for my husband and lately all the DVD player does is scramble the DVD's

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Symphonic DVD consumer RIPOFF
This unit Symphonic, is totally out dated and still being sold to unsuspecting consumers as new and up to date technology. What a farce!!! Try to find a DVD disk that will record on this piece of JUNK!. Only the original 1x or 2x DVDs and only one or two brands will work.
I called the manufacturer and they will sympathize with you but have no answers to the problem other that they know of the difficulties with finding disks that will record but just say some people have found them on the internet, GOOD LUCK!
This is made by Funai under three other brand names and all have the same model number,SR90VE and apparently the same problem.

After this post I got this reply from Funi costomer service .
I replied back and have not heard back from them yet.

Thank you for your inquiry:

While posting that make sure sure you put this in there too.

Below is a list of discs that should or should not be used with the DVD recorders.

DVD-R

4x can be used

8x will result in a disc error.

DVD-RW

2x can be used

4x will result in a disc error.

The following discs have been tested and are proven to be compatible with our DVD recorders.

MEMOREX DVD-R

FUJIFILM DVD-R

FUJIFILM DVD-RW

IMATION DVD-RW

IMATION DVD-R 2.0

TDK DVD-RW 2X

TDK DVD-R 2X

The following are brands of discs we DO NOT recommend:

MEMOREX DVD-RW

SONY DVD-RW

SONY DVD-R

TDK DVD-RW 4x

TDK DVD-R 4x

Please be aware that a free software upgrade is now available to customers. This upgrade will enable your unit to recognize the (DVD-R 8x) discs. To obtain a copy, please call 1-800-242-7158. Customer service by phone is available 7 days a week 6:00am to 9:00pm pacific time.

In order to receive the upgrade we need to know what firmware version your unit requires. First you need to access the DVD recorders service mode. Turn on the DVD Recorder and the Television, make sure the unit is on the DVD side. You may access the service mode by pressing the CMSKIP button on the remote control. Once you press CMSKIP you must press the numbers 1,2,3. You must do this quickly so it may take a couple tries. The model name will appear on the screen followed by Firmware Version. I need to know the serial number next to FE:
Press the RETURN button to exit screen.

Customer Support

"Thank you for your reply.
I called your customer service number prior to my posting of this previous message and was told that there was NO firmware upgrade and they were working on one but could only tell me that some customers were successful in getting 1x to4x DVD disks on the internet.
I searched for some time and could not find any online.
My first contact with you by e-mail resulted in a reply that advised me to send the unit in for repair at my cost as it was out of warranty, and that is what prompted me to call customer service and get bad information.
I found a firmware update on Sylvania website for this model and since I had no other choice, as customer service said NO updates are available, I downloaded it and applied it and now the recorder is working again on 1x to 8x DVDs.
The following is my equipment information, Symphonic Model SR90VE from the firmware version screen.
Can you confirm that I am using the right firmware update?
Model Name: E9400UD
Firmware Version
BE: R1F3207V1E
FE: NRS0106 MST040326

During the upgrade the Firmware Upgrading screen showed the following information:
FE NRS0115
FE Firmware
The unit seems to work now but still has recording issues near the end of a recording cycle.
Do I have the correct Firmware update and if not can you send it to me?
I will Post your replies as suggested.
John "

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Even DVD-R 4X Don't Work Well
It took me a while to figure out I have to use 4X disks for this unit. Now I am able to record a disk. However, almost every disk I record plays back decently in the unit until about halfway through. After that point the playback pauses for 1/2 to 3 minutes and then skips over much recorded material. After that happens the playback keeps pausing, skipping and exhibiting other weird artifacts.
I have bought a third brand of DVD-R 4X (top of the line Taiyo Yuden) to try. If these fail, I will pitch the unit and stop throwing good money after bad. Perhaps a Panasonic?

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - DON'T BUY IF YOU WANT TO RECORD DVD'S!
I bought a Symphonic DVD/VCR recorder, SR90VE, at Wal-Mart in July, 2005. Judging by these reviews and others I've seen on the net, it's the same machine as Sylvania, Emerson, etc. Now it's August, 2006, and I've finally gotten around to pulling out family videotapes to transfer to DVD, my original reason for buying this machine--plus the great price of $199.

But guess what? I've just gone through a 10-pack of Memorex 16X DVD's, and the machine says every darn one has "disc error." Obviously, this piece of junk is way outdated and only recognizes some earlier version of DVD's.....but as of this writing, the only blank DVD's for sale in our small-town Wal-Mart are 16X.

So I'm piping mad right now; the machine will not work with today's blank DVD's (who knew DVD's came in so many different speeds?) So I've wasted that two hundred bucks. I'm not going to search all over the internet trying to find the "right" kind of DVD's, and who wants to spend time on the phone trying to get overseas customer service to understand the problem?

I will say the machine has done fine simply playing either DVD's or videotapes, no problems. But I could have bought a DVD/tape player for $69. And since other reviewers say the machine starts eating tapes, I'm not going to trust my heirloom tapes to this machine.

So now I've got to go spend several hundred bucks ALL OVER AGAIN and try to find a decent recorder. I'm not happy at all with Wal-Mart, Funai, or the ****GOOFY**** (nicest word I can use in a family setting) engineers and marketers who push this crud on the unsuspecting public.

Oh yeah, I've learned a lot in the last 2 hours. The main lesson being, stay the heck away from Funai products!!! I just hope this warning deters some other poor dupe like me from throwing their money straight down the toilet.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - The bad reviews are correct
I was given this unit as a present. I feel bad for the people who purchased this for me; they wasted their money. I have been searching for DVD-R/RWs that will work in this machine and thanks to the reviews on this site, I now know what to look for. I have spent a considerable amount of money on DVDs that do not work. And, as another reviewer mentioned, my unit is now eating my VHS tapes. It is a good thing it is out of production and that Amazon no longer has it available.

For years, architects have gone to great lengths to protect their buildings from marauding skaters. But as aesthetic trends move toward folded planes that transition seamlessly from wall to ceiling and back to wall, designers have been looking to their former adversaries for a lesson in flow.

"We have this fascination with buildings becoming topography," says Alejandro Zaera-Polo, a partner at London's Foreign Office Architects, "and skateboarders have that physical experience." So for a park in Barcelona, his firm extended paving stones up the sides of small hills—to shield vegetation from salty sea breezes. At least that's what it told city officials. But skaters got the message. The resulting quarter-pipe landed on the March 2006 cover of Transworld Skateboarding.

Architect Zaha Hadid shares the love. She wanted her Phaeno Science Center in Germany to be an all-inclusive venue for pedestrians and skateboarders alike. Liability issues prevented skate-park designation—though you'd never guess it from the YouTube videos of pro skaters "visiting" the museum. "We design spaces that are flowing and continuous, and—just by coincidence—skateboarders look for that kind of continuity," Dillon Lin, an architect (and skater) at Hadid's firm, says with a wink.

And though the new Oslo Opera House (shown here) was inspired by the image of two glaciers colliding, the architects at Snøhetta didn't call on glaciologists to help fine-tune the details. They enlisted real experts in twisted planes: skateboarders. "We spoke to them about surface textures and the areas they prefer," architect Simon Ewings says. His firm followed up the conversation with a statement in stone.

Snøhetta used different finishes of marble to guide skaters looking for rideable surfaces. Acoustically sensitive parts, like above the auditorium, got rough marble that's unpleasant to wheel over. But other areas silently beckon skaters. Surfaces rise up all over the place to become ledges, curbs, and benches—like the jagged facets of a glacier (or skate park). One particularly tempting spot is a 3-foot-wide railing of smooth stone. Snøhetta architect Peter Dang is, ahem, absolutely sure it's skatable. "Just make sure to fall toward the inside," he advises.

Tricked Out

The new Oslo Opera House is much more than a temple to the vocal arts. It's a palace of thrash, with as many gnarly facets as the best skate parks. Here are some key features and suggested moves.

The proposed acquisition of Macromedia by Adobe is not a done deal. Both companies are under the scrutiny of the SEC, and it must also be approved by stockholders. While Macromedia/Adobe gives this process three to nine months, some industry analysts feel that is being overly optimistic. But assuming that all is goes as planned, Macromedia will cease to exist. Everything will be in the Adobe name and with the Adobe interface.

Paul Glen says that fear of layoffs is a de-motivator for creative problem-solvers like those in IT.
