Editorial Review:

Product DescriptionSpectec SDW-820 is the world's smallest SD WIFI card (802.11b) compatible with today most popular PDA models: iMate, iPAQ, Dell, etc. The card's sleek and compact design is less than half the size of today standard SD wireless cards, while outperforming its competitors in stability, speed, range, reception strength and more. Are you sick of how far your SD WiFi card sticks out of your PDA? Not only does it look tacky, it makes it pretty easy to accidentally break. The Spectec SDW-820 is your solution for connecting to the web anytime and anywhere! We dare you to compare the SDW-820's performance characteristics against similar cards from Sandisk! You will not find a better product!

Features:
  • Worlds Smallest SD WLAN Card: 38.5 x 24 x 2.1 mm (1/2 the size of major competitors)
  • Major OS Compatibility: Windows Mobile 2003/Pocket PC 2003 2nd edition only, Windows CE v4.X, Windows Mobile 5.0 & 3.0. Incompatible with Windows Mobile 2002 (upgrade will not work)
  • Hardware Compatibility: iMate (iJoy), iPAQ, Dell etc...
  • Interface: SD I/O Ver.1.0 (Support Ver.1.1 or later), IEEE802.11b / Wi-Fi compliance
  • Surf Wifi Hotspots: Coffee shops, airports, hotels and etc.

Customer Reviews
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Works like a charm
Got this for the Palm Treo 700w and it works fine. There was a small learning curve on how to use it but it works great now!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Does what it's supposed to.
This is a decent SDIO wireless card. Using it in my IPaq with no issues. The WLAN utility is basic, but very functional. Need to reboot sometimes to pick it up but besides that, can't beat it with a stick for under 30 bucks. Nice.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good Stuff, some flaws
The card works fine on my i-mate Jam, but I wont give 5 stars due to:
- If you leave the radio ON, it will drain your battery in a few hours
- Software hangs up from time to time. Windows reset required.
- Signal is not strong as I would like.

price/benefit is good, I recommend the item.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - It works
I have had this card in my PDA now for about two weeks. Installation was straight forward and card does work as advertised. I am using is with an IPAQ 1940 running v4.2 of pocket PC.

The Good:
-installation was simple
-card recognized with no problem
-it has expected range for something so small - and in general I think the range is very good
-works everywhere I have tried - my home network, public hotspots, etc.

The Not So Good:
-using activesync can be hit and miss - sometimes when I plug in it works and sometimes I need to eject the WAN card and reboot the IPAQ - I can't say I have spent too much time getting to the bottom of this and the workaround is not too much trouble
-I do find myself resetting the IPAQ more often then before the card, but this is not because the system has crashed but because it has stopped recognizing the WAN card - again, I have not spent much time troubleshooting this and I do not find it that much of a problem, just a little inconvenient

My final thoughts on this are that it works great, it's not perfect, but I paid about $20 for it and it was way cheaper than buying a new IPAQ with built in wireless networking.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Did not work with hp ipaq 2215
The card does not work with my device. It doesn't even show up.
Don't buy!

I've heard it said by Dave Winer and many many others: if only Dean had reinvested half the money raised into the Internet, then ...

OK, so you're the Dean Campaign Chief Information Officer in August 2003. The money starts to roll in. $20 million over six months, $2-4 million per month.

What would you spend the money on?

  1. What does your monthly budget look like?
  2. What is your application and infrastructure portfolio?
  3. How much will you allocate to maintenance?
  4. You're building from scratch, so what problems do you hope to avoid through wise architecture?
  5. What are your big milestones?
  6. Who are your key vendors?

How do you spend in consonance with the campaign strategy?

  1. How will you use the Internet to bring offline voters into the campaign at the same numbers as radio or television broadcasts?
  2. What is your online strategy for responding to attack ads and opposition pundits in radio, television and print?
  3. Online community takes time to build and is very hard to organize geographically. What will you do to match the state-by-state primary schedule?
  4. What can you do with online services to serve the campaign in caucus states?
  5. You are preparing for Bush to launch in Spring 2004. What are your countermeasures to reach out to moderate Republicans online while the GOP uses its advanced voter email systems to barrage 200 million validated email addresses?
  6. How will you lower the cost-per-vote vs. the GOP?

Not that it wasn't technically possible before, but the HP Mini 1000 now has official support for 3G WWAN Mobile Broadband out of the box and with support for multiple cell carriers.

Previously, users had reported the existence of a dormant SIM slot inside the Mini 1000's WWAN module, and ability to hack the drivers to enable the hardware. Now that it's official, it's as easy as firing up connection manager 1.0 to get 3G going on the 10-inch netbook, albeit for an extra $200 (?!?!?!?!). In any case, the new and improved Mini 1000 is available from HP now, but dont forget, the MIE version is coming soon. [HP]
