Not for MAC owners
We got this player to hook up to TIVO and DirecTV and to playback store DVD's and home DVDs created on a mac. The player insists on setting up local channels everytime you turn it on until it is successful tuning in your channels. Since we are using it with tivo and directv, the player can not find any channels to synch. You can not seem to bypass this 'feature' This is pretty annoying.
We also had to send the first one back to Cabo Wabo since it was defective. (Cabo Wabo was GREAT with the exchange! Please do business with them.)
As for DVD playback, the box box does NOT like DVD's created with OS X. It will not play DVD-R or DVD+r disks finalized with a MAC. I have had some luck with disks burned on a PC. [...]

Basically Sucks
I've had this recorder for over a year now. Within the first three months, the power supply went bad and screwed up the whole recorder. I had to get the whole board replaced, although it was under warranty. The operation of the unit is flaky. Sometimes it just freezes up and you have to unplug it. The player finalizes discs only half the time I try, so I only use it to watch DVDs. On that regard it is pretty good, except that for some reason it doesn't have a time remaining function for either the track or the disc. It is so frustrating I want to shout! If this is in the machine, please someone, post a review letting me know how to do it.

Fun for the family
I bought this to record my home vcr tapes to dvd. It works great. I also thought since it had time slip I would be using it with tv shows and rewritable discs but then I got a dual tuner dvr from my cable provider and haven't had to use that feature. It is great for copying shows off the dvr when something comes on I want to send to family. Directions are practically in pigeon English and require patience. Not bad for the money and picture quality is ok. You do see a difference between the broadcast programs and ones you record on a hdtv. Fun especially getting all the old home tapes onto DVD. I would recommend this if it hasn't been replaced by something better. I have had it for around a year now and no problems.

Best in its class
This is an excellent unit and I would definitely recommend as one of the best recorders in the class without a hard drive. The DVD-RAM compatibility works as a low-storage capability substitute for the lack of a hard drive (9.4GB DVD-RAM discs are available). Using DVD-RAM discs allow you full editing freedom (cut, delete ads, order, etc.) of recorded media. Unfortunately of course very few other units can play the RAM format.
Excellent compatibility, the only common discs it won't RECORD on are DVD+/-R Dual Layer and DVD+RW (it does do DVD-RW). It doesn't play is DivX for those of you downloaders.
Records:
DVD-RAM, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW
Plays:
DVD-RAM, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+R DL (dual layer), DVD-R DL
There are not very many bugs in the firmware to cause you grief, but you can also easily update to the latest version. It simply requires you to go on the Panasonic website, download a CD-image and write this to a CD-R. Put this update CD in your unit as per the instructions and it updates itsef in a couple minutes.
On a final note, I had a the same password problem as some of the other reviewers and found the solution:
1. Turn unit on.
2. Open the tray.
3. On the front of the unit (not the remote control) press PLAY and RECORD
for approx 10 seconds. This will reset your password.

Awesome!
I can tell you from years of experience with all different types of VCR's that this is a quantum leap ahead of that! Ok let me start with the Great and then work down from there:
Great:
Quality. Record quality in XP, SP and LP are great, EP is ok but a little grainy, My kids don't mind but I notice the difference.
DVD-Ram: Absolutely AWESOME, Did I saw awesome? I mean Freakin Awesome! Record and erase up to 100,000 times awesome. DVD-RAM Disks are a little more expensive and I recommend buying only the Panasonic. The only catch with DVD-Ram is that it can only be readby another DVD-RAM device. So if you record something that you want to keep and play on other DVD's you are out of luck. To solve this I went out and bought a SONY DVD burner for my computer and I can make copies to regular DVD that way. Pretty handy.
Time slip. Excellent feature, record and pause live TV no Tivo monthly cost! Record one show and watch another! Awesome! Commercial skip, awesome too. (30 second intervals) Blast those bad boys away!
Chapter creation, make your own chapters. Nice GUI interface too.
Good:
Remote:
It's a little hard to get used to, if all else fails press the green circled button, I think it's oriented in the left hand corner next to the enter button. Sevral times I thought the unit was "frozen" and unplugged it to reset, I found out the hard way that if you are in a menuu that dosen't go anywhere, press that button and it will take you back to many of the main menus.
The remote is a little hard to figure out so if you have a VCR that's still flashing 12:00, I suggest that you buy all your DVD's and not record them.
The Ok:
You still need to "finish" DVD's on the machine before you can play them in another DVD player, takes about 30 seconds.
I could go on and on about the features, but Panasonic's web site does a good job at this.
Bottom line? Throw out your old VCR!
