Probably the most perfect PDA
I bought this item from eBay a couple of months ago for just £25 (under $50 USD) inc. postage and packaging. The device was in mint condition, with the exception of the missing flip cover (which I would later purchase from eBay)...and it came with OS 4.1.
I have to say: I love this device! I have experienced no problems with it whatsoever, and finding software for it is a breeze.
Graffiti was very easy to learn, and I can now write on my Palm as fast as I can on paper. But, if writing a lot...you can always purchase a pull-out keyboard for the device. I got one brand-new and shrink-wrapped for an amazing price, from eBay.
The Killer Ap has to be AvantGo. Almost everyday I'll sync my Palm to download the latest from The Times and CNET News.
I would most definitely consider the IIIxe a 'trusty' device...and from reading reviews about other devices from Palm...this is the most perfect.

A very reliable palm at a affordable price.
I have enjoyed the benefits of the PalmIIIxe. It took the place of my huge day timer and note pad I carried around with me. So it's not color, the information is still the same. I have my camera cell phone w/web brouser, so I have it all in my purse. Recommend this item if you are just getting started. I dropped my last one and broke it and have missed it tremendously. It works great with my AOL calendar and email addresses. Type information into AOL and then sync them to the PalmIIIxe or vice versa.! It's so easy! I even include in my AOL calendar when my bills are due and they come up on my Palm calendar and I set timers for my bills payments and Doctor, etc appointments. I just can't imagine being without the PalmIIIxe. I also like it cause it is slim and fits into my small purse. The fact that all the information is backed up on my home PC is great. When new one arrives I will be able to sync information to it.

Every thing I wanted in a PDA
I may be a 21st century man still living in the 1990's, but I believe that newer PDA models have only added costly features that add no real value. The Palm IIIxe is rugged with an integrated flip case, has more than enough storage space with 8 mb, allows you to upgrade the OS, and offers exemplary battery life. Very nice examples of this model are available now for next to nothing either used or refurbished (some even new in box). Ask yourself why do I need a color screen to keep track of my appointments and address book? Why do I need a rechargeable battery that will give up on me in 3 years, when I can run my IIIxe for over a month with cheap disposable batteries? Why would I want to try to surf the Internet on such a tiny screen? Why would I want a wireless phone, PDA, and camera all built into the same expensive unit when I already have a phone and camera that work so well? For me, the answer was that the IIIxe is every thing I want in a PDA, and nothing more.

THIS IS REFURBISHED!!!!
This is my first review and I'm a little hot about it. I just received my Palm from Tiger Direct and it is refurbished. Not only that, but not all the items that are supposed to come with it are in the box. I have no idea how it works, but know that you are not buying a NEW product. Plus, I am reading the return directions from Tiger Direct and they are awful. I am waiting to hear from Amazon and will amend this if they take care of the problems. UNLESS YOU WANT A REFURBISHED ITEM, DO NOT BUY THIS.

Palm III xe is probably the best "PDA"
I had my Palm IIIxe for 3 years, it's truely an amazing PDA. When you look around, all the new PDAs offer way too much features for a real PDA. Bid deal, you can use wireless, and surf the web...etc. But come on, why would you want to actually surf the web on such a tiny screen? Look at the battery life on the new PDAs, you have to charge very often (2-3days) compared to the Palm IIIxe. With 2 AAA batteries , this handheld can easily last for 4 weeks (not days). Also the new PDA require you to change the battery approx every year (you can still use it, but you have to charege it every second, as the battery's ability to hold a full charge will continously decreasing). Those special rechargeble batteries easily cost $60 usd +, and the Palm IIIxe uses AAAs, which cost the fractions of those special batteries. It has all the feature a PDA should have, address book, appointments, calendar, and many many add on softwares(like a graphing calculator,games...). A Palm IIIxe can't let you watch movies, listen to MP3s or surf the web, but it help you to meet your daily tasks like any other PDA will do. If you want a true PDA, not those ones that you have to upgrade every year in order to keep up with the newest OS (namely Windows Mobile) and games offer, or spent $$$ on batteries every year, then go get yourself a Palm IIIxe right now, it's a ultimate PDA for the real users.
