Great little AIO
I read the reviews and had reservations about buying this machine. It seemed to me after reading the reviews that most problems were when using with an OS other than XP and since I use XP pro I thought I would take a chance (I had an HP 7110 that was about 5 yrs. old and after that one had multiple problems I tried a Canon MP530... which brings me running back to HP again). I have an HP laptop about 3.5 years old with an AMD processor and 2 gigs of RAM.
I found the setup easy. I followed the advice of other reviewers here and set-up the printer wireless first (had to manually enter the ssid and wep encryption but the printer manual directions made it easy). I then downloaded the software and installed it. PRESTO, everything worked so well that I've decided not to connect to the printer with wires!
The printing is fast and clear on economy setting and doesn't use much ink. For printing 2 sided brochures on normal print setting it is excellent and again doesn't hog ink (unlike some other printers I've had). The 2 sided is a little slow but who cares... I'll print 30 brochures per week and do it at off times so I'm not sitting there waiting for my printer to be freed up for other things... that's the beauty of 2 sided printers... they work unattended. The fax works fine and still no problem with the document feeder (the HP 7110 had terrible paper feed problems). This machine is relatively small and about average as far as noise level. The software behaves well on my machine (much improved over the previous HP software). In fact I like the software... it manages my faxes, scans and printing without hogging my resources and couldn't be easier to use.
Overall, you can't beat it at these prices. It has and does everything without costing you an arm an a leg on ink.

Struck Gold! Great package for the money!
Nice set of features for the money. The things that attracted me to this printer (over Canon MX830/850):
- better scanner resolution (4800 dpi)
- ink usage/price (at least on paper HP sounds better than MX830)
I upgraded from a Canon IP4000 printer+canoscan flatbed scanner to this and so I have had enough experience with these multiple color ink tanks! It is only useful to have multiple color ink tanks IF you are printing a lot of full color photos all the time on photopaper (that skew to one particular color!) For normal home/home office use, users printing just color graphics and a few photos once in a while, it doesn't matter much (actually it might be cheaper to go with this one color ink tank).
Also things to note:
Silent operation: It does make some noise but at tolerable noises; definitely much quieter than my old Canon IP4000 printer and canoscan scanner used to make.
Fast printing in text mode and graphics for the money (and double sided printing at that)
SOFTWARE INSTALLATION ON VISTA:
1. I followed all the other user's comments and downloaded software directly from HP and didn't use the enclosed disc. That worked out beautifully.
2. Wireless setup: I followed other user's caveats and set the wireless settings manually (under the menu, network settings, wireless settings manual), and then also setup a static IP within my router's range (192.168.1.xxx) (quite high so that normal DHCP assignment won't reach there; I was lazy; could have set the DHCP range to a smaller range and used an IP address above that range).
If you need the MAC address of the printer (if you use MAC address level filtering in your wireless router like me), use the wireless test network report printing from the wireless settings menu - it prints out a sheet of all the wireless radio settings of the printer.
3. Also installed the basic driver on my laptops and they all found the printer quite promptly and I was up in less than 30 minutes from opening the package.
Not a single hitch in software install! Having had a bad experience with HP software (pivot software that comes with the HP 22/24" monitors), this was great for once.
Things I would like to see and missing:
Fax to PC only sends black and white faxes to PC (as per manual); that's OK I guess (not a big issue for now).
Sorry Amazon, I picked this up at Sony Style, just because it was available immediately (got it in 4 days compared to Amazon's 1 month time to ship on this). Otherwise I wouldn't have minded paying another 10 more at Amazon if it was in stock, a small premium for the excellent customer service at Amazon.

Seamlessly works on Mac/PC network.
This printer is exactly what I wanted!
I was looking for a multi-function wireless printer. When my husband brought this one home, I was anxious to get it set up - to say the least. I have minimal networking background, however have successfully set up a few home networks in my time. Knowing this printer was a wireless connection, I knew it wouldn't be an easy feat to get it connected and working properly.
Our home network is currently running a Windows Vista desktop and a MacBook laptop. I first started the wireless configuration from the laptop. As with my past Apple experiences, I just hooked up the printer (USB) and let the computer walk through downloading the correct drivers rather than using the CD. It took a while to get everything downloaded, but in no time, I was printing.
Next was changing the printer to be wireless rather than USB. After a few minutes in the Wireless Setup Wizard on the on-screen menu, it was working!
All that was left to do was load the CD on the Vista machine and voila! Seamless wireless printing. I can print from my laptop while sitting on the couch. (But yeah, you still have to go to the other room to get it.)

Mac user needed a new printer
NETWORKING
Great printer! Easy to set up and get going on the network. I like the web based interface for configuration. Thanks HP. That's thinking.
PRINTING
LOVE the double sided print and the fax/copy feature. Quality and speed are far better than my last HP as well. I especially like the way it operates like a copy machine with the top feeder tray.
SOFTWARE
The software that comes with the printer does the job. I have PC and Macs on my network. Both operate virtually the same way. Gotta love that. Now Mac comes with some slick image management software so I don't use all of what gets installed. However, I poked around in it and it appears to operate similar to iPhoto.
WHY THIS PRINTER ONLY GOT 4 STARS
I have only two bones to pick with it.
1. On Macs, the Setup Assistant doesn't go away after you set it up for network printing. Every time you boot up, it pops up asking you to re-setup the printer. It's no show stopper but was a little annoying till I found the help online to stop it from happening. You basically trash the setup assistant.
2. Every time I plug in my phone line to fax something, it kills my DSL connection. I followed all of the instructions several times and even talked to HP support. No go. The printer is great and it's networking features are worth it... just wish it wouldn't kill my internet connection when I need to fax.
CONCLUSION
Great printer/fax/copier. Networks great! Software and drivers work great. Installs fast and your up and running in no time. Just beware of those two little exceptions.
