Middle of the road model, read on for interesting ink facts
I bought this printer simply for the fact that I had run across the HP 57 OEM ink cartridges marked down to $3 at Staples. It seemed like a great bargain, and I just found the lowest price HP printer that uses these cartridges so my children would have their own printer for school projects.
So far the printer has held up well, but I only use very high quality paper, HP Bright White Inkjet paper to eliminate dust particles that can clog a printer over time. I'm positive this has made a difference in eliminating break-downs and paper jams. I even printed over 40,000 sheets on one printer I owned before it finally needed repair.
About this printer: it's nice to have a built in scanner, which comes in handy for scanning in important documents and of course pictures, when the relatives want to see the kids school pictures. It's also helpful to have the copy function, which my son found useful the other night when he forgot to bring home his homework, and he just needed to borrow a neighbors homework sheet to make a copy of it. Saved by the printer!
It also has the ability to make copies in color or black and white, as well as in photo or plain qualities.
There are three things I don't like about this printer. First of all, it's noisy, second, it doesn't have good access if you needed to clear a paper jam. It just opens from the front paper tray panel, so it allows you to replace ink cartridges but that's about it. Also, the fast draft does not produce as nice a printout as fast draft on my other HP printer. Still, we tend to print most things in fast draft to save on ink, and we tend to replace our ink 3 times a year.
The included software is nice for editing photos if you don't own other photo editing software. I found the tan and blemish eraser tools to be helpful.
Finally, onto the subject of ink. The included ink cartridges, HP 21 and 22 are really not the best. Each included cartridge holds 5 ml of ink, but this printer can just as easily accept the 54 and 57 cartridges which hold 20 ml and 17 ml respectively. I highly recommend that your recycle the included cartridges and get $3 from any office supply store that recycles, and then buy the 54 and 57 cartridges from a discount source and get the $10 and $15 refills from Walgreen's. You'll save a ton of money over the long run vs. constantly running out of ink on 21 and 22 cartridges.

very nice
i was reviewing this item befor buying it, and i totaly disagree that its loud. and i dont think it uses alot of ink at all. you can set the setting on economy print and it will stil prit with nice quality. and as far as making noce, its much nicer and quieter than my ex dell one. haha. i thought that when people mentioned that it was loud i pictured my dell. well i think its fairly quiet, i mean do people actualy expect printer not to make noice. Also for a small home printer it prints very quick. over all im verry happy with it, it looks good, sounds good, prints good. the only thing i think it could do better is scan faster. but is all good!!! thanks :)

Beware! HP DeskJet 4100 Series Software & Windows Vista conflicts
I purchased the HP Deskjet F4180 when it first came on the market. For several months, it worked fine-no problems. Recently, I noticed that the Imaging Monitor was missing from the taskbar. When I tried to scan a document the HP Solution Center program did not work. I kept getting an error message: "No HP Devices have been detected. HP Solution Center will close now." I emailed HP Customer Support and the next day they replied with a five-step solution which they believed would solve the error message problem. After four hours and following the five-step instructions provided, I could not get the HP software to load properly. It should not take this much work to get a printer to operate properly. Perform a Google search (on the error message, above) and you'll see the various issues surrounding the HP F4100 series software and Windows Vista OS. Apparently, there is a serious conflict with the Windows Vista OS and the HP Deskjet F4100 series device software which makes the scanner portion of the F4180 to become inoperative. I could print, but could not scan any documents. Look elsewhere for an All-In-One printer/scanner/copier without the hassles inherent in this HP model. I tossed the HP Deskjet F4180 out the window and bought an Epson AIO.

Quick install, compact size, good enough quality for daily HH printing
It took me less than 10 minutes to hook it up and get it working. I like the compact size. I am not sure how long the Inkcartridge is going to last though.
