The printer was easy to set up, and works great. I've been using it for a few weeks now and haven't had any problems.

Beware the Setup Issues for this printer !!!
Most people will have a terrible time setting up this printer. This is because the printer ships with its network card turned off. Neither the printed setup manual nor the manual you download from brother's website mentions this.
So most people will follow the setup instructions and hit a brick wall when it comes to connecting the printer to the router for the wireless setup.
Bottom line is, when you turn on the network card (by a series of complicated maneouvers check the FAQ on the Brother website) it works fine. The printer is very flimsily built.
But so far it works fine.

WIRELESS SETUP INSRUCTIONS ARE BROKEN!!!!
Once again I pay a lot for a wireless product only to find that the installation instructions are broken. I'm sure the printer is fine but good luck installing wireless using the steps in the manual. I'm not sure what went wrong. (My guess is they left out a major step involving plugging a cable back in that they asked you to unplug one step before) I'm writing this while I am also downloading all the software from brother's website. I amazingly resisted the urge to destroy the manual and cd that came in the box. At this point I would rather have spent 100 dollars more if there was a laser printer that actually worked wireless out of the box. I'm pretty sure no such thing exists, but I wish vendors would solve this damn problem and release instructions that work. They need to get it through their thick heads that the install process is their first time to impress or piss off the customer, and lately I find that they delight in pissing me off. (Exception was the PS3. I plugged it in and it worked like magic)

Great Wireless Printer at a great price
I typically buy HP printers, but couldn't find an economical wireless solution. I reluctantly went with the Brother 2170W figuring the cost was so low if it didn't work out I could get another in the near future. I've had the printer for over 6 months now and it has worked great. I will look into Brother printers in the future.
Installation: No problems installing. I followed the instructions closely and connected via USB initially to set it up. I had heard there were issues getting it setup, but everything worked great. I even setup two other laptops to use it without problems.
Print quality: I've been very happy, coming from inkjet printers I've loved the sharp quality text and graphics.
Noise: It seemed slightly loud at first (not while printing, but while in "ready to print" mode). I since turned down the time that it stays in "ready to print" mode before returning to idle and haven't noticed it as much. The idle power saver mode is completely silent.
Speed: Print speed is really good with very low warm up time.
Wireless: This is the reason I bought it and it has worked great. I no longer have to leave a desktop running to print a laptop upstairs. My whole family has enjoyed using it.

Not with older wiring
Not for old wiring.
I have this printer set up in an apartment that has all lights and all standard electrical outlets on two 15-amp circuit breakers. Running at the same time as a Mac Pro and a 19-inch LCD monitor, the printer makes the lights flicker and briefly trips the UPS battery backup when it first warms up and when it prepares to print. (The printer is not hooked to the UPS, and it's not on the same outlet.)
Obviously, Brother took no consideration of older wiring systems when it designed this laser printer, even though it's supposed to be entry-level. In order to deliver "instant-on" printing and 23 pages per minute, Brother engineered far too high a power draw for this model. (The Brother HL-5280, which I tried before this, was even worse.) My old HP Laserjet NEVER makes the lights flicker.
I might also mention that the Mac USB printer driver for this model seems to be deficient. A week before I bought this, Apple updated its Leopard operating system to 10.5.5, and apparently the security improvements broke the Brother driver. After hours of frustration, I was able to locate a partial and complicated fix online that at least got it printing. Brother will probably get it fixed entirely before long -- but I don't think it should have happened in the first place.
Other than that, the printer seems OK, though it should come with a printed manual -- not just a printed booklet for quick setup -- and it looks like it will need more maintenance than my old HP.
